Alice Chittenden, a portrait and floral painter, was born in Brockport, New York in 1859. Alice arrived in San Francisco when she was very young. Her father, a prosperous miner, encouraged her art studies. In 1877 Alice began a long affiliation with the School of Design under Virgil Williams and later taught at that school for over 40 years.
In 1887 she married Charles Overton. The marriage was short-lived and she never remarried. Over the years she made several trips to New York, France and Italy to exhibit and study. A resident of Pacific Heights, Chittenden was active as a teacher and painter until her death there on October 13, 1944. |
