Revelations From Behind the Curtain: Russian and Soviet Impressionism 1930s-1970s is an exhibition of the Fleischer collection of Russian and Soviet impressionist paintings. These paintings were produced under a communist regime. During that time, government-sponsored painters were very respected and highly rewarded. Of course, there were restrictions they were required to adhere to when selecting their subject matter for public exhibition. This group of talented painters was provided with extensive training and considered an important and integral part of the communist experiment.
Many of the painters strongly supported the idea of communism and were motivated to create paintings supporting the common cause. These paintings should not, therefore, be dismissed as purely propagandist. What is perhaps most intriguing are the underlying messages being communicated. The early paintings often exude strength, self reliance, and contentment. The demise of confidence in the communist system can be sensed in the banal cynicism sensed in later paintings. We look forward to presenting to the community the technical mastery and compelling expressiveness of these Russian and Soviet artists.
