American Impressionism
and Post Impressionism

Post Impressionism
a style of painting marked by an emphasis on form and color and a movement away from "truth to nature" and the application of pure pigment.

In this painting, Mount Alice at Sunset by Franz Bischoff, there is a stronger emphasis on color than realism. Bischoff's handling of color is succesful, but a mustard colored sky is a step away from reality.
In this painting, Serenity, William Wendt is placing more emphasis on form than realism. Also, the use of black pigment is back in his palette, a definite step away from pure Impressionism.

Both Bischoff and Wendt are exhibiting Post Impressionist tendencies. Look for the similarities in the application of form and color in these two paintings and the Post Impressionist painting,Well: Millstone and Cistern Under Trees by Cezanne.
